Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24, 72 in Long Beach, California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents in her early years because of her Aunt Denise. She worked as a night nurse to allow her mother the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art as well as theatre. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay discovered through experience that art can be a powerful tool to engage in social activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced the importance of speaking up through the arts. DuVernay lived in Compton throughout her life, but would spend every summer with the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby city of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama to help inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1990 DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English and African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was tasked to watch and search the home of an individual Jury member. She was disappointed by her journalism tasks and decided to change to the world of public relations. DuVernay got her first job as a publicist in an unassuming production studio straight out of high school. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. In addition to PR her agency also created a variety of lifestyle and promotional networks including the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
